Bourton & District

Country Dancing

Date: 1st & 3rd Thursday
Time: 10.00am
Duration: 1.5 Hours
Where: Baden Powell Hall, Bourton-on-the-Water
Group Organiser: Steve Ford

The group started in 2014. At that time, there were rusty memories of dancing at school by our members. Consequently, we did simple dances you might encounter at a barn dance, such as the Cumberland Square Eight.

However, as we gained in confidence, we changed to 17th and 18th century dances, in particular those found in John Playford’s English Dancing Master series of books, which started in the 1650s. If you have seen some of the Jane Austen adaptations on television and film, you may have spotted some of the dances in our repertoire being performed by Colin Firth and the like. Some of the early dances from the mid-17th century have evocative names, such as “Row well ye Mariners” and “Jenny Pluck Pears”. Some dances are lively, while others are more stately and elegant.

Our members go at their own pace. The dances not only give a gentle physical workout but also get the brain working. While there is a core of members who have been there since the beginning, it is easy for new members to join in. It’s a relaxed atmosphere and everyone gets to dance all the time.
