Cycling - Short
Leader and Contact: Denis Compton
Normally, the group meets fortnightly, throughout the year.
We usually cycle for about 2 hours, achieving 16 to 20 miles and the aim is to have an enjoyable and sociable ride with a cafe break in the middle of it (and sometimes a pub lunch). Most of our rides take place on designated cycle paths, canal towpaths and 'C' roads. We try to avoid unpleasant weather (our rides are for pleasure!).
With regard to equipment, any bike with gears will do but please ensure it is in good, safe condition. We also accept e-bikes. As you can see from photos on this page, a hi-vis jacket is useful for most of the year and we all wear helmets. It is also worth getting a spare inner tube for your bike since it's often the quickest way to deal with a puncture.
We will usually meet at 'Cafe Viaduct' on Grandstand Road and full details will be emailed to you over the weekend before each ride. If the riding conditions are likely to be unsuitable on the day, please look out for a cancellation email before 8.30am on the day of the ride. Examples of unsuitable conditions - the chance of icy or frosty roads and paths, considerable rain, a prediction of 5 centigrade or less and wind gusting to more than 30mph.
