Ross on Wye & District

Groups

Our leisure and social groups are run by members and reflect the interests of our current membership.

Groups meet in local and community halls such as the Larruperz, or they may meet at members' homes. They mostly meet on a monthly basis or some are fortnightly or weekly.

Each group has a co-ordinator who might have some knowledge of the subject being considered but learning experience is one of shared experience of the subject.

A small charge is made by some groups, for example for materials, for tickets to the theatre or gardens, or perhaps towards the hire of a room.

Whilst every effort is made to accommodate new members to groups, it must be stressed that before joining Ross U3A, if your sole purpose is to join a particular group, it is advisable to check whether that group can accommodate new members. By the nature of some groups they are restricted to room size (if held at a members' house), number in teams (ie scrabble - bridge) etc. However DO NOT LET THIS PUT YOU OFF as we are always willing to accept suggestions as to how to increase group size; even if this means creating a second group or hiring a suitable room. Also, it is important to stress the many other advantages of joining Ross U3A - meeting and socialising at the Monthly Meetings and exploring the many other groups that currently exist. We look forward to meeting you.

Joy of Gardening

The idea of this group is to get like minded people together at each others houses alternately once a month and it is normally the last Friday of the month.

The aim is for people to see other peoples gardens, different aspects (shade, full sun) and what grows where. Also the type of soil obviously has a huge impact on the type of plants you can grow.

Then at the end of the year, people can swap seeds and also take cuttings (within reason) of other peoples plants. It is a fun thing to do and involves the hostess of providing tea, coffee and biscuits and a chance to meet new people, especially if like me, you have only lived in the area for 15 months. Photography

Just when we were despairing of ever finding someone to co-ordinate the group, we have a volunteer. He is John Ryland, a new U3A member, and a very talented photographer. You can see some of his work on his website www.johnryland.net

John is unavailable on Thursdays, so new day is 2nd Tues in the month at 10 am.

Science

Science is inside us and all around us. From the kitchen to the chemical factory, from the microscopic world of bacteria to the limitless expanse of space. Have you ever thought, 'I wish I knew more about science?' If so, why not dip your toe in the water? (Water- that very strange material that believe it or not, should not be a liquid at all!) in this case, dipping your toe simply involves coming along to our proposed new Science Group.

As a new Group, our format will evolve according to members' interests and backgrounds. To begin with we'll use the format where one of our number leads a session on a topic of their choice, followed by informal group discussion. There is nothing like researching a topic and explaining it to others to improve one's own understanding. But rest assured there will be no obligation to do this. We plan to meet at the Larruperz Centre on the 2nd Monday of the Month at 2pm.

Science is a vast subject. Some of the topics that we mights cover could be drawn from: Earth and Planetary Sciences including Geology, Environmental Science, Astronomy and Space Exploration; Life Sciences includingEvolution, Cells, Physiology, and the Science of the Mind.

There should be plenty here to whet the scientific appetite. Exactly what we cover will be up to you. If you would like more information please contact Frank Bowden: Home 01989 567125 Mobile 07779 284820 or email frankbowden25@gmail.com
