March 2019 FIELD TRIP TO WORKINGTON

We spent the morning looking at industrial sites on the walk from the station to the Helena Thompson Museum, a gem of industrial detail about the area. The museum is run by volunteers and payment is by donation.

The Workington area is rich in redundant coal, iron ore and steel workings. It is the place where Bessemer honed his steel making process and since its industrial decline and the effects of Storm Desmond has had some regeneration funding injected.

Mary Queen of Scots spent her first night in England as an honoured guest at Workington Hall. She landed at Workington and stayed overnight at the Hall, after which, local officials took her into protective custody at Carlisle Castle.
