Day and Time of Meeting - The 2nd Wednesday in each Month from 10.00 until Noon. (Unless otherwise stated)
Aim - To learn about the history of this American Art form and enjoy the Music played by the leading players and Bands.
Our meeting on Wednesday 19th February I concluded telling the life story and we heard a variety the music of Jazz Giant and Big Band leader William 'Count' Basie. He ran his band for almost 50 years and he was sometimes accused of being a lazy pianist using a minimum number of notes, but he could tinkle the ivories as quickly as anyone. He was of course a contemporary of the other Jazz Giant of the Big Band Era - the wonderful Duke Ellington.I played duets with the 'Duke' and several of the top singers including Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.
Then I went on to talk about Drummer Louis Bellson who was the first Drummer to play with 2 Bass Drums. Apart from his Big Band he played in several well known Big Bands including Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman. He also made a couple of Albums backing Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald with Oscar Peterson on the Piano. I then went on to the next Big Band alphabetically to Les Brown. He began back in the early 30's with his first band The Blue Devils, which later was renamed Les Brown and his Band of Renown. I ended the session with a video of the Les Brown Band and 2 male dancers dancing together, one of whom was Les Brown.
Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 11th March a Anne's home. Then I will be continuing telling the life story and playing the music of the Les Brown Band.
In future meetings we shall also be talking about all kinds of Jazz Music in more detail and listening to a wide variety of styles that are now available via You Tube. So let's start foot tapping.
At the present time our Group is full, but if you are interested in Jazz in its various guises then I have Jazz Appreciation Group 2, see a separate page on this website.
At our meetings, there are some very happy faces when we start playing some lively Jazz.
