MONTHLY MEETINGS

A Monthly Meeting is held on the third Monday of the month, in the Theydon Bois Village Hall at 10.00 a.m

The doors open at 9.15am with light refreshments available before the meeting starts.

This gives the opportunity to meet up with members and booking up for the various events and groups

The meeting itself starts at 10.00am with announcements followed by a guest speaker.

Dates for the all meetings will appear in the Monthly Newsletter and on this website nearer to the date.

Tony will take you on a journey through the life of the legendary Buddy Holly from his birthplace in Lubbock Texas in 1936 to his untimely death in 1958. Tony`s Talk features some of Buddy's smash hits - That’ll be the day, Oh Boy, Peggy Sue, Rave on, Heartbeat. You will learn about the stories behind the songs and from many well-known performers that were influenced by his music.

Topic -The Cuban Missile Crisis

Speaker - Richard Gibbons

This talk will centre on the ‘Cuban Missile Crisis’, of October 1962, when the whole World was on the brink of ‘Nuclear Armageddon.’

Richard will explain about some recently-revealed information demonstrating that the Crisis was even more dangerous than was believed at the time, and how the Crisis actually continued for three months rather than the usually-believed 13 days.

In this talk Mark considers how conventional approaches to family history, with their emphasis on documentary evidence and surnames, can be complemented by genetics.

Topic - Nature Through the Seasons – Autumn – Winter

Speaker - Roger Hance

This talk shows how nature copes when conditions are turning colder. As winter approaches and cold weather starts to bite, different sets of wildlife comes to the fore. It covers : Red Kites in Mid Wales, Seals on beaches in Norfolk, Red Squirrels and Deer in the Scottish Highlands. It also includes the wonderful assortment of Fungi and Lichens found in our woodlands, waders and birds of our estuaries and shorelines, as well as birds in the snow and much more.

Topic - From Walking to Wheelchair- My Story.

Speaker - Freya Levy

Freya credits sport for changing and saving her life after being diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy at the age of 14, ending an early career in rugby and football. Since then, she has gone on to represent England and Great Britain in four different sports, including winning a European gold, two silvers and a world championship bronze with wheelchair basketball.

Celebrating the life and work of this illustrious poet, artist and social reformer, who pioneered a movement that reacted against the soulless machine production of the Industrial Revolution. Morris attempted to promote joyful labour, the enjoyment of fine craftsmanship and simplicity of expression.

Topic - Sentiments of Christmas

Speaker - Jim Stebbings

Though acknowledging, respecting and marking the true meaning of Christmas, ‘Sentiments of Christmas’ is an eclectic collection of aspects of the traditional Christmas season conveyed through music, stories, humour, sentiments, images and pictures presented through over 100 slides. Parts of the presentation provide opportunities for members’ vocal participation if desired. This is a Christmas presentation with a difference that may be just the thing to get your group into the true Christmas spirit.

Summer at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens is particularly beautiful – with trees and plants in full bloom, including Rhododendrons and Azaleas with strong perfume and striking blooms.
A myriad of wildlife can be seen, (Stoats, Weasels, Field Mice and various types of deer with their young, and a number of wild Wallabies. (particularly in the area of Oak Walk). 65 different bird species have been recorded thriving in the gardens – and you might even spot baby owls being fed, and in some areas of the garden, and a pair of Red Kites can be spotted flying overhead.
Cafés, Dolls’ House Exhibition, Rock Garden, and Wallabies - all accessible by tarmac roads and paths. Accessible toilets are located at the visitor entrance and The Clocktower Kitchen.
A free Shuttle Service runs between the Clocktower Café and Engine Pond on most days from 10.00 to 15.00 for visitors with limited mobility.

Travel to St Paul’s station (Central Line). Meet in Cafe Nero just outside exit from station at 10.30.

If convenient for you, meet Gloria at Loughton station at 09.30.

We will walk across Millennium Bridge, along the south bank to Tower Bridge and finish at Tower Hill.
