Wine Appreciation One (WAGS 1)
Following a summer of very enjoyable activities (a BBQ and a trip to Bombay Sapphire) for the combined groups, we settled into the autumn (October) with a presentation by Steve and Maggie Dettmar, which was exceptional by its diversity as well as the quality of the wines.
The first wine was from Belgium but was preceded by a very good beer, also from Belgium, which was a total surprise. Following this came an Austrian white, which was peppery with pear aromas - must unusual. After that there were wines from Greece, The Lebanon, Bulgaria and Uruguay. In all a very different but delicious evening.
November's presentation was given by Graham Palmer and was a selection from "Naked Wines", an organisation that uses the Internet to market its wines although it has recently acquired Majestic Wines and its semi-shops/warehouses to give it a high-street presence. Naked Wines uses a membership ploy in its merchandising in that members become "angels" on joining and qualify for various special deals. Having said this, they support the small independent vintners and those in start-up situations and their wines are always good quality and not expensive.
December saw us enjoying our Christmas party early in the month. The ladies (and some men) of the group do their best to cover the oval table we use at the Organ Inn with culinary delights and these, together with traditional Christmas drinks (mulled wine, etc.) gave us a really good start to the festive season.
We now await fresh offerings in the New Year and hope they will be as good as previously.
