Jazz Appreciation

The Jazz Appreciation Group meets once a month on the 3rd Wednesday from 2.00 pm to about 4.00 pm and meetings are held at Blackthorn Village Hall, Thame Road, Blackthorn. At present we have 32 listed members in the group. Recent presentations include: Jazz in the 50's and 60's, Jazz Alphabet (now up to letter Z!) Women in Jazz and Jazz Clarinetists. Members are encouraged to present programmes but it is not compulsory!! Presentations last about 60 to 90 minutes, using CD's and typewritten notes. The group also makes visits to Jazz Clubs and Festivals.

The group was started in March 2004 when a small group of people interested in jazz met to determine the formation of the group. Following which, the first meeting was held at Weston on the Green with Ian presenting a programme of 'Jazz Piano'. So we are now in our 13th year, and from early small membership, we currently have 32 members, meeting monthly at Blackthorn Village Hall.

Following our summer break, in September Doreen gave a varied presentation which included skiffle greats Lonnie Donegan playing Putting on the Style, Tommy Steele, Johnny Duncan and the Vipers Skiffle Group. Monty Sunshine shone with his trio and his quartet playing 1950's tracks including Blue Blood Blues and from the 60's, Creole Love Call. We were entertained with his band's greats such as Muskrat Ramble and a particularly good 1968 recording of Hushabye which featured (among others) Joe Temperley on baritone sax. The Vipers Skiffle Group's offerings included a rendition of the traditional song Greensleeves.

At our October meeting we welcomed the return visit of Dave Moorwood, guitar/vocal, Mike Wills, reeds, and Roger Davis, bass. The trio visited the group last October and continued their excellent alphabetical presentation based on popular song composers in the 20s and 30s, giving a brief history. Some composers’ tunes covered were by Hoagy Carmichael, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and others: another enjoyable afternoon of Live Jazz.

Also in October Doreen, along with Bob, Eileen and Geoff attended a stirring performance by the Chris Barber Jazz Band at The Stables, near Milton Keynes. Chris Barber (now well into his eighties) was the leader of the 60s Trad Boom which brought back memories of Monty Sunshine, Pat Halcox and Ottilie Paterson. To complete this memorable evening Doreen has a wonderful photo of her receiving a huge hug from Chris, both wearing big smiles! What a night to remember Doreen.

Lastly at the October meeting a presentation utilising a DVD compilation went down well leaving everyone looking forward to DVD JAZZ 4!. Sadly the presenter is moving away from the area hence leaving a void for the follow-up presentation of DVD JAZZ 4! A volunteer?
