“The greatest shipbuilding town in the world!”. From the earliest records of shipbuilding on the Wear in the 14th Century until the completion of those infamous red ferries Sunderland-by-the-sea was one of the main shipbuilding towns in the UK. And shipbuilding, like Nissan, was also at the centre of a variety of support industries. Ships made Sunderland!

(Derek has had a varied career in shipbuilding, marine engineering, sub-sea engineering and marine operations. He was the MD of an oil broking company, and MD of eco-tourism company. He has a BSc in Marine Engineering and two Masters of Arts in Environmental Studies. He is very well known on the speaking circuit having visited many community groups)
Wed Apr 3rd 3rd April - The Amazing Magic of the Most Mundane Things! (Colin Wilbourn)

At 1719 (Seventeen Nineteen - Holy Trinity Church, Sunderland SR1 2BB)

Starts at 2:30.

Refreshments are available to be Purchased including Tea or Coffee (or bring your own drink).

A pair of old socks, a motorway barrier, a broken door, books, rotten apples, a pink backpack, songs, poems, comics and tattoos! Colin reveals how these seemingly mundane and random objects have inspired some of his amazing and magical sculptures! He promises you will be amazed or your money back.

(Nationally renowned artist Colin Wilbourn has produced a multitude of public sculpture, both large and small, all over the country. Locally, audiences have been enthralled by works such as; ‘The Upper Room’, carved trees in Durham; ‘The Red House’, stone carving in Sunderland; ‘Stell’ in Northumberland and ‘The Celestial Kitchen’ in Stockton. Recently he has found time to produce a whole series of smaller, more detailed, works in his studio in Roker.)

At 1719 (Seventeen Nineteen - Holy Trinity Church, Sunderland SR1 2BB)

Starts at 2:30.

Refreshments are available to be Purchased including Tea or Coffee (or bring your own drink).

This talk looks at the origin and nature of some of the amazing rocks that have built, decorated and protected Sunderland over the centuries.

(As a geologist since the 1960s Andy has worked in Cornwall, South Wales and Africa. For the past 40 years he has been teaching geology at various levels in Sunderland and is still trying to retire despite the best efforts of his students!)

A potted history of the three statutory new towns established in County Durham; Newton Aycliffe in 1947, Peterlee in 1948 and Washington in 1964; their objectives and progress through the decades, and impact on the north east as a whole up to and after their closures in 1988.

(Ged - originally from Manchester- came to work for Washington Development Corporation after starting his professional career in Telford New Town. He was responsible for commercial market research and took part in negotiations with some of the biggest investments in the later years of the new town. In the final years of the Corporation he was the trade union chair involved in its run down and the transfer of functions to other authorities.)
