Literature

The Group Leader is Maureen McCoy

The Literature Group will meet on the First Thursday of the month at 1.30 At FRIENDS' MEETING HOUSE ACADEMY PLACE/BUTTERMARKET ST WA1 2NR.

We look at all aspects of Literature, from ancient to modern - from a variety of points of view.

Having concentrated on British and American fiction for many years, in recent years we have looked at a number of novels from other cultures and will try to do the same in the future.

For 2022/23 we covered some of the following topics
Summer Reading
Sense and Sensibility
Christmas Stories/Poems
The Waste Land T S Eliot
Peter de Vries
The Big Jubilee Read
Northern Irish Literature
Changes(poetry)
Three Men in a Boat

In 2023/24 We are hoping to cover the following topics (topics are not in strict date order)
Summer Reading
Reading Berlin
Young Adult Fiction
Christmas Stories/Poems
J.B.Priestley
Wilfred Owen
Canadian Fiction (1+2)
J.G.Ballard
Indian Crime Fiction

Most sessions are led by a group member with some speakers from other U3A Groups and also occasional external speakers.

Sessions can include close reading of a particular novel or poem and/or a DVD/film clip which may provide biographical information, or outline the historical context for a novel and author's work etc. The main idea is to offer an introduction to a novel, poem, author or period which may lead members to wider reading, sometimes in areas new to them.

We are a small group at present so looking to recruit new members. All that is required to join is an interest in Literature and in sharing your reading experiences, interests and views. Come along and try it.

For further information contact Maureen through a message on this site, or find contact details on your membership sheet or timetable. We will continue to take account of the best format for meetings in changing circumstances.
