Local History
The Local History Group was set up in 2002 to explore the rich heritage of the Borough of Spelthorne, but from the outset it was recognised that the history of Spelthorne needed to be set in the context of the surrounding area. Therefore over the years the programme has covered not only topics relating specifically to Spelthorne but also to the surrounding counties, the Thames Valley, and London.
The programme takes the form of a mixture of monthly lectures, outside visits, walks, and the opportunity for members to take part in research if they wish to do so. In 2015 the group used Jerome K Jerome’s book to revisit the places mentioned along the Thames, and produced our own book “u3a In a Boat” based on individual research. Another year we explored the villages of Spelthorne and more recently several members researched the history of their own houses and presented their findings at our monthly meeting. The sources for the study of Local History include Archaeology, books, documents, maps, photographs, oral memories, social and industrial heritage, building styles and Museum collections. All these aspects form part of the Annual Programme which runs from January to December. In March 2020 we were just three months into our annual theme of a study of the “Ancient County of Middlesex” when Covid intervened. Fortunately we were delighted that Russell Grant came to launch the theme at the meeting just before lockdown.
The group meets at Staines Methodist Church on the second Tuesday of each month from 2pm for a 2.30pm start. Membership has grown steadily over the years and now stands at close to 100, with attendance of 60-70 at each monthly meeting. The premises however can accommodate large numbers and we are thus able to operate an open membership policy. You can be assured of a warm friendly welcome and a great way to learn about the history of our Borough.
