Military History
When: The group meets at 10.15 a.m. on the 3rd Friday of each month (except August and December)
Where: Our meetings are held at St Hilda's Church Hall, Ashford, TW15 3QL.
Aims: The overall aim is to extend members knowledge and understanding of the events, actions and impact of military actions both in the UK and abroad. This can be looked at as follows:
o Research by members of the group, either individually or in syndicates, into specific campaigns or actions.
o Discussions on the impact of such events. This could take the form of:
- Who did what and to whom
- The consequences for both the military and civilian populations
- What happened next
o The social impact of warfare on women, children and families. This could include the changing roles especially of women in following their men as well as medical advances due to conflict.
Pre-requisites: An enquiring mind and a desire to research all matters relating to military history

o The National Arboretum near Northampton
o RAF Memorial in Runnymede
o Bentley Priory – RAF Fighter Command HQ in WW2
o Bletchley Park
o Interesting battlefields –
- Reading (English Civil War)
- Siege of Oxford (English Civil War)
- Basing House (English Civil War)
- If we have sufficient interest we could look at visiting place such as The Somme, Ypres and Normandy.
