Having explored the origins of Classicism in ancient Greek Art in previous terms, we have moved forward by circa1200 years, skipping our own 'Dark Ages / Gothic Art' to study the first re-use of this classical tradition in the work of the early Renaissance with artists such as Giotto, Donatello, Fra Angelico and Ucello to name but a few!
In later terms we will eventually reach the artists of the High Renaissance, with whom everyone is probably more familiar such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci.
In the first meeting of the year, we discussed quite what is meant by the term 'Renaissance' and how the meaning of this term has altered and been influenced by the cultural ethos of each of the art historians we explored.
Although this may sound very scholarly, we have great fun, doing daft things like adopting the poses of sculptures to help us understand the artists use of balance or lack thereof! Anyone who is thinking of joining us will be most welcome!
