The Geology Group

The group welcomes new members to any event unless otherwise shown.

Many of the group's meetings are on-site, at varied dates and times according to the availability of access (e.g. tides, site opening times).
For information contact Caz Donovan the group's coordinator.

Forthcoming Event

17th November - 3pm at the Dartmouth Inn - Mining and Mines on Dartmoor

Reports from the Group:

September 2022
We visited the Kelly mine near Bovey Tracey where micaceous haematite was mined until 1951. It has been lovingly restored by a group of committed volunteers and was totally fascinating. Micacious heamatite is a special and very rare form of ferric oxide, the commonest ore of iron. It is still used sidely to produce highly weather-resistant grey paint. The volunteers showed us round - many of the restored parts work and there's a small visitorcentre.

July 2022
In July we visited the Heritage Centre and other historic places on Bovey Tracey. See attached file.
