The Natural History Group normally meets on the first Friday in the month. During the winter, we meet at Worksop Library at 2.00pm and enjoy a variety of speakers.
This year we will hear about Peregrine Falcons, dormice and prehistoric animals to name but three. As the weather improves , we will visit various nature reserves both local and on the coast. Sometimes this involves an early start as when listening to the dawn chorus or watching a local group birdringing. We have been pond -dipping, bat - hunting, looking for midwife toads and searching for glow worms
Anything connected to the environment, be it geology ,fungi, trees, spiders, butterflies and of course all species of birds from nightingales to nightjars come within our brief.
To cover the cost of speakers and guides we pay £10 subscription in December or January for the following year. We also ask for £1 each when the venue is the library to pay for the room hire.
Whenever possible we car-share and we have an accepted formula for contributing to travelling expenses.

As always the weather plays a vital part in our summer and spring meetings. We had hoped to see grass snakes at Woodsetts Quarry Pond at the beginning of May but although the sun shone the cold east wind kept them from view.
Later this month on the 26th we plan to go to Besthorpe wildlife reserve near Collingham. For most of us this will be our first visit there .
Two years ago we went to Rutland Water to the annual Birdfair. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear naturalists giving talks, signing books and giving demonstrations. It is not by any means devoted to birds but to all wildlife and environmental subjects. There are stalls and information about holidays all over the world, a unique opportunity to try out binoculars and scopes at specially reduced prices, and plenty of places to eat. We shall be going by mini bus. If anyone in the U3A would like to join us on Sunday August 20th please let me know.
Tickets are £13.50 or £11 for RSPB members
