Ancient Greek History

The Ancient Greek History group was set up by Frances Pye and John Goldsack in 2016. It was decided to follow the pattern of the existing Roman History group and include topics of personal interest as well as the actual history of Ancient Greece. Any topic that catches the interest of a group member is fair game, especially if they are willing to do some of the research. Over time, we hope to cover all aspects of Ancient Geek history, culture and everyday life.

We started off by trying to grasp the complexity of the Greek creation myths; there were far more gods than we realized, so after familiarizing ourselves with the Olympian top twelve, we parked that subject for later. One surprising fact has emerged: at the time of the Persian Wars around 480BC, the Athenian navy included one trireme for about every 650 citizens: by comparison, in the modern US navy, one destroyer equivalent represents over 250,000 citizens. Perhaps one was safer in Ancient Greece.

Many of our meetings are concerned with the development of Ancient Greece, but whenever we feel like something more lighthearted, we examine one of the myths or enjoy some of Aesop's Fables, If you would like to join us, you will be made very welcome.

We meet on the third Tuesday of every month, 2.00pm - 4.00pm, at the Royal British Legion Club in Church Street.

If you are interested in joining us or would like further information, please contact the group leader, John Goldsack, on 01684-298922 or via the email icon on the right.
