History

There are two History groups meeting on the last Thursday of most months at the Mountbatten Sports Centre in Ottery Moor Lane. Group 1 meets in the morning from 10.00-12.00 and Group 2 in the afternoon from 2.00-4.00. We have a break in the middle of our meetings for coffee or tea. The meetings take the form of a presentation with members asking questions and adding information from their own knowledge which has proved very successful.

We share the cost of hiring the hall which for 2020 will be £5 for each member for the whole year of eleven meetings. We don’t meet in December.

Both groups study the same programme which has been put together this year from suggestions made by members of the group. The topics covered have been a wide selection from all periods: we’ve studied Social Housing 1850-1950’ The Reign of Edward 111, 1327-1377, Joseph Bazalgette: Sewer Engineer and Improver, Catherine de Medici 1519-1589,Queen Victoria: monarchy in change, Woodrow Wilson and Treaty of Versailles, Home Rule for Ireland 1800-1922, ‘Peterloo’: England 1812-1822, The Reign of Queen Anne 1702-1714, Rise of Brandenburg-Prussia, John Ruskin and the Gothic Revival this year.
