Chinnor & District

Archaeology & Geology

We are a small and friendly group who meet on the 4th Monday of every month in the Chiltern Room at the Village Centre, 10.30am to 12pm.

Our meetings are generally face-to-face with a guest speaker talking about some of the many aspects of Archaeology & Geology. We also encourage group members to participate by telling us their own experiences of the subject with photos and artefacts, and perhaps producing a presentation using the projector in situ in the Village Centre's Chiltern Room.

Archaeology & Geology Programme - 2024

15 Jan (Please note, this meeting is a week earlier than normal)

‘Life and Death in a Roman Villa, the Hambleden Story’. A welcome return by Jill Eyers. This talk is based on the amazing discoveries found during a project undertaken by the speaker in the Hambleden valley.

26 Feb

‘Sunken Ways & Chalk Pits of the local Chiltern Scarp’. Our speaker this month is Maurice Pullen. Maurice lives in Chinnor and has done much research in the area to produce this talk, also recalling his memories of the area from his childhood.

25 March

‘The Birth of Britain, the Gold Rush’. The third episode of this series showing on YouTube.

22 April

Colin Oakes is returning to give a talk entitled ‘Recent Archaeology’. Colin is an archaeologist and gives many different talks on archaeology and other subjects.

27 May

Bank Holiday - No Meeting

24th June

Pann Mill, High Wycombe. Guest Speaker, Malcolm Connell, is a volunteer at Pann Mill and he will tell us about the history and restoration of the mill. Pann is one of the few remaining mills along the river Wye and the only one in operation which you can see on their open days during the summer months.

If this whets your appetite for all things archaeological, get in touch and come to our next meeting.

On joining, members will be asked to pay a small annual fee to cover room hire and any speaker’s fees/expenses. We would welcome any new members; experience definitely not a requirement, just a willingness to learn and participate.
