Mah Jong

Mah Jong may appear to be a complicated game but it is really very easy to learn and you can quickly become proficient at playing the basic game. You don’t need to own a Mah Jong set as we have plenty of sets available within the group. Why not come along and try this fascinating game?

We meet on a Monday afternoon from 2pm to 4.30pm and our focus is on playing in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with a cup of tea or coffee to aid the play. At the moment we are a small group so we meet in a member’s home.

The game of Mah Jong is played by three or four people and is similar in principle to Rummy but it is played with 144 tiles instead of a pack of cards. The tiles consist of three suits (Bamboos, Characters and Circles) as well as special tiles (Dragons, Winds, Flowers and Seasons). For those of you who are interested in the history of the game – it originated in China hundreds of years ago. Nowadays the symbols on the tiles remain the same as they were in the beginning but the tiles themselves are now plastic – a sign of the times!
