Group Contact: Malcolm Douglas
The History Group continues to explore our rich and varied past chronologically, thematically and well, however we fancy! This past year we have looked in detail at the early Stuarts and the English Civil War and will continue from September with the Commonwealth under Cromwell and the later Stuarts. We shall continue to look at English institutions and traditions, and how they have evolved: subjects as diverse as English Country Houses during two World Wars, the Ravens at the Tower of London and Mini Cars.
One of our members was honoured by the Queen with the receipt of Maundy Money and he shared the day with us and (bravely) passed round the tiny coins. It offers us an opening into a wider look at English Ceremony of tradition.
There is History in our attics and on our mantelpieces too, which are part of our personal and family histories, viewed in the wider context, and we shall continue sharing these as our own version of The Antiques Roadshow.
Our links with the History Department at Lord Wandsworth College continue to develop. A joint session on the American Civil war allowed for a mixing of generations in informative and lively discussion, and the Head of History will be speaking to us about History teaching and learning, past and present.
