As there have been several articles recently in national newspapers regarding the 400th anniversary of the publication of the First Shakespeare Folio (first published collection of plays by Shakespeare) in 1623, we thought it was an appropriate time to announce that BOOKING IS OPEN for our next study day on February 13th 2024. The cost will be £15 per person.

We are delighted and honoured that professor Tiffany Stern, Professor of Shakespeare and Early Drama at the Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham is joining us for the day.

The morning session will focus on the first Shakespeare Folio, the closest thing we have to the plays as he wrote them. Out of 36 plays included, 18 of them had never been published before. Later Folios not only added further plays but corrected errors and updated language as a way of sustaining Shakespeare’s influence and reputation.

A lot of you will remember that u3a member John Markham appeared on the Antiques Roadshow a few years ago with a handwritten notebook dating from around 1630. It was a cause of great excitement among academics that this rare book had come to light and there has been significant research undertaken by Tiffany Stern and her colleagues at the Shakespeare Institute since then.

Regards, Helen Smith and Sue Galloway.
