Film and Cinema

The Film and Cinema group exists to give its members opportunities to view films selected by them in turn that appeal to them, together with the chance to review their opinions with each other. We can also offer outings to local cinemas and arrange for lifts for those who need one.
At the March meeting we watched Donnie Darko a 2001 American science fiction psychological thriller film written and directed by Richard Kelly. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Katharine Ross, Patrick Swayze, and James Duval. Set in October 1988, the film follows Donnie Darko, an emotionally troubled teenager who inadvertently escapes a bizarre accident by sleepwalking. He has visions of Frank, a mysterious figure in a rabbit costume who informs him that the world will end in just over 28 days.
This was a demanding film to watch and the poor picture quality and lack of sub-titles did not help. It is only at the very end of the film the last 28 days of Donnie’s life are re-configured by time travel allowing him to achieve a different outcome.
