Hillwalkers: Trips and Projects

These few days to a week away, perhaps as part of a longer project, sometimes "stand-alone", are often self catering where everyone contributes to the meals, usually staying in holiday accommodation such as a converted farmhouse, sometimes elsewhere like Youth Hostels.

Our current project, which started in September 2021, is to walk The Pennine Journey, another of Wainwright's ideas, from September 1938! (now somewhat adapted), a challenging circular walk of 247 miles. The route goes north from Settle, via Wharfedale, Uredale, Swaledale, Tan Hill, to Bowes, on via Middleton-in-Teesdale to Hexham and west along some of Hadrian's Wall, passing through Housesteads, to Greenhead. It then heads south for Alston, crossing the Pennines near Cross Fell into the Eden Valley, through the Howgills to Sedbergh, Dentdale, over Whernside and Ingleborough back to Settle.

On 4 September we left Middleton-on-Teesdale (mile 68), walking past High Force, where we began to learn about The Whin Sill and its geology, via Swinhope Head to Westgate; then through Rookhope, over Bolt's Law (partly overlapping with the C2C cycle path), passing old lead mines into the lovely village of Blanchland; on over Blanchland Moor, plantations, and the remains of Dukesfield Smelt Mill into Hexham; continuing north over the Tyne to Planetrees and Hadrian's Wall, which we followed via the Roman bridge ruins at the Chollerford North Tyne crossing, to Brocolitia Roman Fort with its temple of Mithra; then on to Housesteads, crags and loughs to Cawfield Roman Camps; on to the ruins of Thirlwall Castle, where we turned south to Greenhead, over Black Hill to Lampley Viaduct and crossed the South Tyne (mile 138). 6 and a bit days walking, couple very hot days, little rain, lots of interest.

A second week on the Pennine Journey, to walk from Settle to Middleton-on-Teesdale, is planned for April 2022.
