The last meeting of the year for the Opera Appreciation Group was held on 3 December 2021, one year on from the date we started! At this meeting we discussed the National Theatre of Prague"s production of Don Giovanni . This particular production was not enjoyed by the majority of the group. It was a lockdown performance in an empty theatre which sometimes seemed more like a dress rehearsal! That said the music as always was wonderful.
- Meetings are held monthly, on the first Friday of the month in the morning.
- We use two Opera online resources: WNO at Home, when available and Opera Vision, which is an EU Creative programme, showing Operas online from companies across Europe. Both these resources are free to use
- The group chooses an opera to watch at their leisure on line and it then discuss it at the next meeting
- Members are asked to bring suggestions of what to watch next, to future meetings
- We will continue to meet on Zoom
The first Opera of 2022 that the group watched was::
Der Rosenkavalier - Strauss - a Garsington Opera Production
Exquisite music, poignant comedy and fairy tale romance: Der Rosenkavalier has it all. For its Garsington premiere, Director, Bruno Ravella transposes what is perhaps Richard Strauss’s most famous opera to the glamorous 1950s. Jordan de Souza conducts the excellent Philharmonia Orchestra and a bravura cast. The Opera is in 3 Acts and is approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes.
Garsington is a fabulous setting for an Opera and this production was enjoyed by the group overall, though some struggled to engage with Act 1, where the singing was bit "choppy".ie Recitative/sing-speak. Not to everyones taste. It was however a very lively performance with a wonderful set. Words such as sumptuous were used to describe both the setting and the costumes. It is an Opera for female voices with 3 Sopranos in leading roles, all of whom had wonderful voices.. There was good deal of comedy in this Opera, almost pantomime style for some of us ! Unusually for an Opera there is a happy ending Well at least for the 2 young lovers!
For more details about the group, please contact the Convener Anne Pitman. We have a mixture of Opera lovers ,from the very experienced to the new to Opera. Come and join us!

Love is fleeting. But revenge is forever!
Our next Opera is Il Trovatore by Verdi A TEATRO DELL’OPERA DI ROMAproduction at Circa Massimo in Rome Aragon descends into unrest, a count jealously fights for a noble lady's heart. But she has already given it to a passionate troubadour whose mother holds a terrible secret.
Surpassing its hugely successful spiritual predecessor Rigoletto, Il Trovatore was an instant triumph. Verdi’s music is so passionate and transcendent that one almost loses sight of opera’s notoriously most implausible plot, complete with burning babies and bloodthirsty vengeance. British baritone Christopher Maltman stars as Count Di Luna against the breathtaking backdrop of the ancient Roman Circus Maximus.
We would love you to join us to watch from the comfort of your own home
