Philosophy 2

Leader:Julia McClure
11.00 - 12.30 on Thursday every four weeks

We usually meet in a member's house in Writtle. At present we are working our way through a book by Nigel Warburton called “Philosophy the basics”. The group likes this book because it introduces some of the most important areas of philosophy in a fairly accessible way. We discuss the ideas introduced, what they mean, whether the argument is sound and whether we agree with it. Perhaps surprisingly we manage to laugh a lot.
I have a B.A. and M.A. in philosophy (but have forgotten most of it, it was a long time ago!) One member has a philosophy and psychology degree. The rest of the group have no qualifications at all in philosophy. Some of the group have been with us since we started (about seven years ago), others have joined along the way. One of the newest members joined just before lockdown, and the another one has joined us since. Some members like to join in a lot, and some enjoy listening to the discussion. Everybody brings their life experience to help us understand the concepts we are discussing. My main criteria for being a group member is that you enjoy it, whether you prefer to join in or just listen.
While some of the ideas in the book are quite esoteric, we have just finished a chapter on Animals (animal welfare, animal rights etc.) We are just starting the chapter on Politics. This deals with political concepts such as equality, democracy, freedom etc. I have a feeling that our progress through this chapter will be slow as there will be plenty of discussion.
There is no doubt that sometimes understanding philosophy can be challenging – one member refers to it as a gym for the mind. But we aren’t working for a qualification, we just like to exercise our minds. I like walking my dog, but I will never be an Olympic athlete.
So, if you would like to give philosophy a go, please come and join us for a few sessions. You never know, you might get the bug and stay with us. And if you decide it’s not for you, at least you will know why.
