Leader: Chris Bellamy
Meets: 4th Thursday of each month 2.00 - 4.00 p.m.
Gardens & Gardening are good for you!
During the Coronavirus pandemic gardening became fundamentally a hopeful act for millions in lockdown. "When we sow seeds we are looking forward, and with this brings a sense of purpose and motivation" (The Well Gardened Mind by Sue Stuart-Smith). You can watch a recording of the NGS Annual lecture 2020 - 'Gardens are for People' by Tom & Sue Stuart Smith (see link on right).
You don't have to be an avid gardener to join our group, you'll fit right in if you have a love of gardens, plants and nature and like to visit local gardens. From April to September we organise visits to large private or formal gardens within the Essex area, who open their gates exclusively for the group in order to raise funds for the NGS (see link). An entrance fee of around £8-£10 is charged which usually includes tea/coffee & cake. Occasionally we might travel further afield.
From October to March we usually meet on the 4th Thursday of the month between 2.00 - 4.00 p.m. for talks and presentations about various aspects of gardening. This has in the past been at Boreham Village Hall in the Goodwin Room. A small fee is charged to cover the hire of the hall and to pay the speaker. If Covid 19 restrictions prevent us meeting in person these talks will be delivered via zoom over the internet. In January the group usually meets for a meal at a local restaurant, with raffles, garden related quizzes and of course prizes!
