Each session is unique in the sense that it has a different theme. This may be a brief survey of the life and some of the works of a poet, or maybe a topic around which the poems we read are based. Members bring along contributions related to the theme. These may be simply a poem or poems but also maybe, in addition some background about the poem or its composer. It is entirely up to the member as to how large or small their contribution, sometimes a member may not have any poem to offer and this is fine. Each member recites their poem which may be appreciated for itself but often may engender further discussion about the work or its composer.
The whole essence is to retain the informality, friendliness and humour etc. within the group. Themes may range from a relatively serious and brief study of poets who are famous, less famous, (and perhaps occasionally even infamous) to maybe more frivolous sessions involving comedy, limericks, nursery rhymes and their origins etc. The aim of the group is to enjoy reading poetry and to learn something about poets. We are not a poetry composition group although we do have some very capable poets amongst us. This is not to say that those who compose poems may not on occasion give us a rendition of their work. Another occasional feature is that one of the group may wish to lead a session on a topic of their own choosing and any member is welcome to do this. Occasionally we welcome a visit from a poet, normally local, who will give us a talk and rendition of their work and these occasions are always a welcome feature of our sessions. Anyone who wishes to come along to try us is very welcome. There is no compulsion to come again if it is not for you. Simply contact us by any of the means given above and we will respond.
