The activities of the group include talks, discussions based on DVDs (such as a series of lectures on the archaeology of ancient Greece and Rome), visits and field trips.
In 2016 we had a field trip to Hadrian’s Wall to explore the two Vindolanda sites and Housesteads Roman Fort. In 2017 our field trip was to South Wales where we visited the excavated 14th century Newport ship; Caerleon Roman amphitheatre and museum; Caerphilly’s 13th century castle; the Welsh Folk museum which has reconstructed buildings from sites throughout Wales; the Big Pit mining museum which included a tour underground and Blaenavon Iron works site.
The South Manchester Archaeology Research Trust is planning further excavations on Gatley Hill in 2018. We will be joining them in the search for evidence of the 16th century farmhouse.
We have also made contact with the newly formed U3A North West region association of archaeology groups and hope to become involved in their activities.
If you are interested in ancient or industrial archaeology you would be very welcome.
