2016 Holiday in Madrid

In early October a party of 14 U3A members spent an action packed 6 days in Madrid. On arrival in the city we were met by Janan our excellent guide for the holiday. Our hotel was conveniently located close to the so called golden triangle of museums and art galleries.

After a morning orientation tour of the city we spent the afternoon in the wonderful Thyssen-Bornemisza gallery with a charismatic and very knowledgeable local guide showing us the great works of art including some of her personal favourites.

On our third day we were driven to Toledo where another local guide accompanied us to the synagogue and the magnificent thirteenth century cathedral.

The following morning was dedicated to the Prado museum then in the afternoon we had free time to explore the wonderful Parque del Retiro, visit the cathedral, shop or simply relax. In the evening some of the group opted for a fantastic flamenco floor show.

Our last full day was divided between the lovely city of Avila with its amazingly well preserved walls and Segovia with its equally impressive Roman aqueduct, cathedral and plaza.

We spent our last morning visiting the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial before heading for the airport and our afternoon flight home after what had been a fantastic holiday.
