The recent Christmas Tree Festival was held to raise funds for the maintenance of this 11th Century church in Caterham which fell into disuse after the Victorian St Mary's was built. It has since been brought back into community and church use and is a valuable asset to local life. The Friends of St Lawrence's invited local community, children's groups and commercial enterprises to provide and decorate a Christmas tree to illustrate their activities and every one of the 30 entries was superbly and ingeniously designed and decorated. Caterham and District U3A provided three entries:

  • Monica Giddens secured the gift of a large tree and co-ordinated the joint Wednesday Art groups who hand decorated or made beautifully executed baubles, miniature easels and paintings all with a Christmas theme,
  • Fay Farrington and Maureen Jeffery of the Glee Tones produced a musical quiz,
  • Barbara Holloway and Ann Lund gave us scales and instruments illustrating the Recorders.

The visiting public responded magnificently, contributing over £1600 from the raffle, teas and voting slips, giving joint first place for the best-decorated tree to the Artists, with the Gleetones third and Recorders fourth.
