Discussion
Group Leader: | Ian Yates |
Contact: | Please use Members Portal on Beacon |
Date of Meeting: | 2nd Monday of the month (September to June) |
Time: | 10.30 to 12.15 |
Area of Venue: | Wetheral |
What we do:
We meet to provide a friendly forum for discussion of matters local, national or of personal interest. No subject is barred. Informality and humour are encouraged.
The only preparatory work required before meeting is reading a newspaper, listening to radio or TV and keeping an eye open for items that might be controversial and spark a discussion. Members introduce these as “items that caught their eye”.
Members learn to give thought to what is going on around them; to formulate ideas and opinions and to present them verbally in an articulate way at meetings. Members learn to defend their opinions and, if necessary, play ‘devil’s advocate’ to stimulate discussion. They also learn, by listening, that there are usually many shades of opinion on every topic.
The normal attendance is around 18, with an even balance of males and females.
Members seem to be broad-minded and can have a good argument without anyone taking offence. New members are made welcome and have been known to sit, without joining in, for as long as 2 or 3 minutes!
Coffee is taken around 11.15 and members are encouraged to rest their voices but always fail to do so!
