The U3A Robot Constructors' Challenge

CCU3A is responsible for the introduction and co-ordination of the U3A Robots Constructors' Challenge, open to all U3A members nationally. This generates interest within the wider U3A Science & Technology community, not only for specialist robot builders & coders but also for others with a more general technological "bent", and serves as a platform for other cross-U3A initiatives in future.

The 2019 Challenge

For the inaugural event a series of Remote Control Challenges was designed.

This event was held in Stafford on 3rd October 2019, and was a great success. There were 72 Attendees from 11 U3As as far apart as Lancaster, Devon & London. As members set up their laptops for any emergency re-programming, the room in Stafford's White Eagle club resembled NASA's Mission Control Center. Challenges included an Egg & Spoon Race, a Crazy Golf Course, a Skittle Alley and a Maze to be navigated.

At the end the Results were analysed, the winners of the various events were announced, and valuable prizes were awarded by the U3A West Midlands Regional Trustee, Auriol Ainley, who pronounced the event a great success for the U3A; and various attendees provided Testimonials to underline Auriol's view.

Photos of this event are available on the Robot Challenge Gallery and
the Robot Challenge Report, which illustrates and summarises the event.

The Challenge has also been featured on the National U3A Home Page, the U3A National Newsletter for October 2019, and CCU3A's own Facebook presence.

The 2022 Challenge

The U3A Robot Challenge is now live again for 2022, as shown in the attached Robot Challenge 2022 flyer2022 Robot Challenge. It will be hosted this year by Gloucester U3A, but it would be great if you could support Gloucester by visiting on the day, or even better, submitting a construction for the challenges

This is now planned to reinstated for 2022, and the rules for this event are currently expected to be based upon those drafted for 2020 but are currently subject to review. Click here if you want to see these provisional 2020 Rules.
