HAM WALL & SHAPWICK HEATH
---------------------------------------------
After a dismal morning, a group of us met up at Ham Wall RSPB site in the afternoon. Not long after we set off we saw several damselflies and dragonflies, including the small red damselfly and a female common darter. We walked down to the first platform and saw a great white egret, cormorant, and numerous other ducks. We then walked on round to one of the hides where we saw Grebe, Pochard, Wigeon, Tufted Duck, Coots, young and adult swans and numerous gulls. We set off down the track to another hide, spotted a red admiral butterfly basking on the path. There were still plenty of wild flowers around including lesser stitchwort, burdock, comfrey, yarrow, lesser bindweed, vibernum, oxeye daisies, red campion and greater stitchwort.

The only other butterflies seen were the small white, speckled wood and meadow brown. Saw a couple of different fungus, wood mushroom and the parasol mushroom.

Just a few of us then went over to Noah’s Hide on Shapwick Heath, there were several species of ducks on the water and it was lovely to see a Marsh Harrier fly over and then a Bittern A lovely afternoon in pleasant weather.
