Current affairs is a group where the members can bring their own topics to be discussed over a cup of coffee in the pub. At our last meeting our chair, Mike Hartford, brought along an article about the different layers of local government, which stimulated a discussion on their different roles and the efficiency of the structure.

We also discussed an Italian initiative to get more people buying food loose as they did in the past. We talked about the advantages re the environmental challenges of packaging but also the limitations with health and safety considerations. Still I got to mention that in Scotland as a child I was sent to buy a forpet of loose potatoes which in Scots is a dry measure equal to a quarter of a peck. Sometimes going back is the way forward.
