The Archaeology group has been in existence for three years and is currently looking for a new leader.
If you are interested in this group please contact the branch groups coordinator using the blue bird on this page (top right).
Things we have been interested in over our existence, as you can see from the pictures, are looking at local evidence of the Bronze Age and Iron Age and of the Romans of which there is an abundance in our area. Frocester Manor and Uley Bury/West Hill both have evidence of all of these periods.
Members and friends have also kindly shared their knowledge of Landscape Archaeology, the Minoan Civilization on Crete and Santorini and Maritime Archaeology in the shape of the Purton Hulks, Kingswood Abbey and most recently we were introduced to the excavations on a site previously part of the Royal Deer Park near Alveston. As a group we have been able to book historical tours of Glevum and Llanthony Priory Secunda. We have also arranged guided visits to Bristol, Wotton, Thornbury and Stroud Museums;these visits have usually involved an opportunity to see some of the archives and learn about conservation techniques.
