Welcome to Callander and West Perthshire
'U3A' stands for University of the Third Age
FOR A START, it's not a UNIVERSITY in the way most people think of a university now. We don't give out qualifications in the shape of degrees or anything like that. Nor do we ask for a certain level of qualifications before you can join us. University here is only really used in the sense of 'universal' or 'for all'.
The parent body of U3A is The Third Age Trust, based in Bromley, Kent. Their mission statement has the following message:
- The aim is to facilitate the growth of the U3A movement;
- To provide support for management and learning in U3As;
- To raise the profile of the U3A movement;
- To promote the benefits of learning in later life through self-help learning.
Formed in 2012, Callander & West Perthshire U3A is an active and friendly organisation for retired and semi-retired people who enjoy developing their knowledge, skills and interests within a group setting. Some people join to learn something new, others enjoy the social interaction. We are running more than 35 courses this year - the group leaders give their time and knowledge for free but in every course the members participate on the basis that 'teach and learn' is a two way process. All of us have something to give and something to learn.
Our membership ranges far and wide from our base in Callander, encompassing villages to the south and west, from Kippen through Buchlyvie, Gartmore, Port of Menteith, Aberfoyle and Brig o’Turk; east to Doune, Deanston and Dunblane; north to Strathyre, Balquhidder, Lochearnhead and Killin. New members are always welcome - there is a membership form on the OTHER INFO page but take a look first at the different GROUPS - there is something for everyone in this list.
