French Conversation (Killin)
We meet in the Killin Hotel on Wednesday afternoons, between 2:30 and 4pm, each week, starting on 11th September 2019.
We begin by inviting members of the group to talk briefly on a subject that has been notified in advance. For example, this might be: "My favourite kind of holiday". Most people have a few sentences prepared beforehand and then people may ask questions about it. We are fortunate to have amongst us a French lady who now stays in Balquhidder. She is keen on the theatre and is able to supply us with some short, contemporary plays. Having exhausted our topic of conversation, therefore, we shall work our way through a French play. This enables everyone to have a small part as we read it round, and we shall stop after a page or so to check that everyone has understood what is going on!
We ask everyone to contribute £2 per session and this goes to the hotel for our use of their facilities. It includes, however, a choice of tea, coffee, or a cold drink halfway through the session. We don't take ourselves too seriously and, although we spend a little time looking up vocabulary and learning useful phrases, our aim is not to study the language academically, so much as to enjoy speaking it, and to gain confidence in speaking out some words and phrases in practical, everyday French. So, if you're keen to reinvigorate the "Auld Alliance", we can't promise too much claret, but we can guarantee an enjoyable and convivial afternoon!
