Walk 19 - 12th January 2018 Senghenydd and Abertridwr

The Sneggy Saunter

Our best-attended walk ever, with 15 walkers. It was a repeat of Walk No. 2, as there were only 3 participants on this walk 2 years ago. An ideal walk for anyone who wanted to walk an easy, level half-mile, or mile and a bit, if not wanting to do the whole 3.5 miles.

We caught a bus out to the top end of Senghenydd to visit the National Mining Memorial Garden, then walked down to the Heritage Centre where there is a display featuring the disaster of 1913 which claimed 439 lives. We then followed the cycle track along the old railway line back to Station Terrace, Penyrheol near the Bowls. From there, bus back into town.

These links will give more information if you have not been to either previously.

Walk 22 - Wednesday 28th March 2018. A Hengoed Hobble

From Hengoed Railway Station we started by crossing the viaduct, following The Gren Way to Fleur de Lis, and on to Tir y Berth. We left the Gren Way and walk back to the station along the Rhymney Ridgeway Footpath and the cyclepath which was the course of the railway serving Penallta Colliery. Distance was about 4 miles.

Walk 23 - - Tuesday May 8th 2018. Parc Cefn Onn and Ridge

By train to Lisvane. A leisurely 3.5 mile stroll the length of the park before taking the meandering uphill path to Cefn Onn Ridge. From the ridge it was all downhill back to Caerphilly station.

11 members and a guest took the bus to Pontypridd, followed by a scenic bus tour of Nelson, Quakers Yard and Treharris. Crossing the Taff at Pontygwaith Farm, we followed the Taff Trail to the Cemetery and the Garden of Remembrance. We caught the bus at Merthyr Vale Station for the scenic tour back to Pontypridd. We walked about 3 miles.

Walk 25 - Wednesday July 4th 2018. Penarth Marina and Cardiff Bay Barrage.

We caught the train from Caerphilly to Dingle Road in Penarth, then walked down to the Marina, across the Bay Barrage to Cardiff Bay. Lunch in Mermaid Quay before getting the train back. Distance was about 3 miles.

Walk 26 - Saturday 22nd September 2018. The Hetty Winding Engine and Rhondda Heritage Park.

We took the bus to Barry Sidings, approximately 2 miles up the Rhondda Valley from Pontypridd. Adjacent to the bus stop are the listed buildings of Great Western Colliery also known as Hetty Colliery. They house a winding engine which has been restored to run on compressed air. This day was one of only two days annually that the engine is run. We then crossed the road to the Country Park, to walk a mile to Rhondda Heritage Park for lunch before walking two miles back to Pontypridd along the route of Griffith's Tramroad.

Walk 27 - Friday 19th October 2018. The Rhoose Ramble.

By train from Caerphilly to Rhoose, we then followed the Wales Coast Path as far as Porthkerry Country Park, where we chatted to Jim Hawkins who was himself out for a walk. He was on Day 191 of a coastal walk of the UK! After a lunch stop we continued through the park to Barry Station for the journey home. real 'Indian Summer' today.

Walk 28: Thursday 21 February 2019: A 2-mile stroll around Trethomas.

14 members and two visitors turned out or our first walk of 2019, after a 3-month break since our last walk. From Navigation Street car park, we took in the site of the former colliery and coking plant before walking between the disused platforms of Trethomas station to join the cycle path. At the level crossing we walked down to the main road, crossing over to Riverside Park, along the river and back to the start. A welcome cup of tea in Charlie's Cafe rounded off our morning.

Walk 29 Wednesday 20 March 2019. Cardiff Bay Circular.

It was based on Derek Brockway's Cardiff Bay Walk from the TV Series 'Weatherman Walking', taking in Cardiff Bay Wetlands, White Water Centre and, optionally, the Barrage. For details, see http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/tv/weatherman-walking/walks/Cardiff-Bay.pdf

We caught the 25 bus direct to Cardiff Bay. We walked 3.5 miles to the Barrage, where it was intended to catch the water bus back to Mermaid Quay for members who did not walk the final 1.5 miles back to the Oval Basin. Unfortunately there was some confusion over ferry services that day, so we completed the 5.mile walk.
