Walk 11: 1 December 16 - Hidden Caerphilly Footpaths

A stroll around Caerphilly. Parking at ASDA we walked along the brook, through Morgan Jones Park, under the railway line to the Moat House, before following the rail line from Aber to Churchill Park station. The majority of the route was on public footpaths, some even unknown to a few of our members who were long-time residents of Caerphilly.

Walk 12: 8 Feb 17 - Caerphilly Woodlands

A short stroll through Coed Parc y Van, Wernddu Woods and The Warren. We passed the man-made BMX cycle track complex covering an area about the size of a rugby pitch, lime kilns, an air vent for the rail tunnel, clay pits, coal measures, the old brickworks, crossing the railway line next to the former locomotive works.

Walk 13: 4 March 17 - Cardiff Bay Barrage

7 of our members let the train take the strain, which took us to Dingle Road station in Penarth. We alighted to a small shower which stopped within ten minutes. We walked down to Penarth Marina and along the Cardiff Bay Barrage to the Bay area proper. After refreshments in the Millennium Centre we caught the train from the Bay station back to Caerphilly, with a change at Queen Street.

Walk 14: 3 May 17 - Cefn Onn and the Ridgeway

7 members took the short train ride to Lisvane then walked in sunshine up through the park then continued on up to Cefn Onn ridge and down the other side back to Caerphilly station. About 3.5 miles and took 2.5 hours from Park gates to Caerphilly.

Walk 15: 19 August 17 - Rhymney Riverside and Ruperra Castle

After a break from the walking group events, 11 members turned up for part or all of a riverside walk near Draethen and Coed Craig Ruperra. We met at the Forestry car park about half a mile from the Hollybush pub on the road to Michaelstone.

The first part of the walk is level, about 1.25 miles, and crossed the restored Victorian iron bridge then followed the Rhymney River back to Draethen. In the village, some had lunch and returned to the car park while the rest climbed to the ridge adjacent to the ruined castle, before gently strolling back down to the car park. From there we had lunch in the Hollybush.

The whole route was under 3 miles as we did not make a detour to the iron age hill fort.

Walk 16: 3 October 17 - Cosmeston Lakes and Medieval Village

9 members caught the train to Penarth and walked round the corner ffrom the station for the bus to the lakes. We walked round the village, then round the lakes. After a visit to the cafe we walked back to Penarth station along the Penarth Railway Footpath. A pleaasant walk of about between 2 and 4 miles depending on the choice of walk at the lakes, and all in the autumn sunshine.

Walk 17: 24 November 17 - Bryngwyn Colliery, Bedwas

This was a 3-mile circular stroll from Asda car park, taking in two footbridges over the River Rhymney, Byngwyn Winding House, and a field soon to be filled with 350 new houses. Mostly level footpaths with some very short up/down paths. There were a few stiles. Crisp, sunny weather enjoyed by 14 members.

Walk 18: 14 December 2017 - Trehafod to Pontypridd

This was the last walk of the year. 5 members, and Meg the dog, travelled by bus to Rhondda Heritage Park at Trehafod. After coffee we walked the Dramroad Trail along the course of the Barry Railway, through Barry Sidings Country Park, back to Pontypridd. Approximately 2.75 miles of good level paths and no stiles.
