Having existed for 12 years or so, we have found a formula that works very well for the level of our mature participants, who have all had some experience of french previously – perhaps ‘O’ level many years ago! Many of the available text books and BBC publications are geared to younger people, with exercises about discos, shopping and exams, not suitable for us, so we use ‘Rendezvous’, a magazine (6 issues per year) published by Concorde publications. It contains many topical articles and news items about France and its culture, politics and stories from history. It also includes dialogues in parallel text, vocabulary, puzzles, crosswords and a little bit of grammar.
We have a very relaxed way of learning, enhanced by the warm and comfortable surroundings of the Old Hall Hotel. We spend the first part of the lesson speaking in french about topics prepared for homework and related to the previous week’s reading, and this often develops into discussion about the topic, giving us all a chance to speak and listen to each other. Then we may do a dictation and/or take turns to read and translate a passage from ‘Rendezvous’ and other sources. We try to speak french all the time, although we don’t always succeed!
Our group enjoys a lot of laughter together, and I find contributions from group members always interesting and diverting.
Several ex members now live happily in France! Is that a good enough recommendation?!
