Philosophy is the study of the general and fundamental nature of reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. The Ancient Greek word philosophia was probably coined by Pythagoras and literally means "love of wisdom" or "friend of wisdom".In casual speech, the term can refer to any of the most basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes of an individual or group.
U3A in the UK counts over 300 philosophy groups and we have a national adviser for the subject. It can be seen as a dauntingly huge discipline and practically speaking it can only be approached in gentle stages. The monthly meetings of the Buxton group generally follow the pattern of having one of the members introduce a topic followed by a general discussion, the aim being understanding rather than agreement. None of the current group members are professional philosophers.
