Good Literature
Is there such a thing as ‘good literature’ and how can we tell ?
( …and is there ‘good’ art’…..’good’ music ?)
N.B. This course is now fully booked
This course will investigate the question of what is GOOD LITERATURE and look at who has defined this quality and why. We shall look at a variety of literary pieces from poetry to drama and novels and having been given the defining characteristics, we shall try to prove whether or not a piece deserves its classification.
We shall then look at popular culture, the crime novel and the romantic novel and also at combinations of literature with music, such as opera and musicals – all of which judged against these criteria.
The course will start on THURSDAY, the 28th of JANUARY at 10 am, and will take place every 2nd and 4th THURSDAY of each month.
The sessions will cover the following subjects:
1) The DEFINITION, its whys and wherefores. Three accepted examples from the canon of literary greats: DRAMA, POETRY AND PROSE
