Science, Medicine & Technology
This group aims to:
1. review new, exciting and diverse areas of science, medicine and technology which will impact on all our lives now and into our future and those of our children and grand-children.
2. inform people in layman’s terms of what these discoveries are and how they will change our lives.
Examples are advances in gene therapy, stem cell therapy in treating diseases that develop such as diabetes and macular degeneration, understanding and treatment in Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, discovery of new materials in batteries and the applications of graphene, how to manage pollution, safety of nuclear power, developments in astronomy etc.
Meetings are held monthly and members can propose topics of scientific interest to discuss. The group co-ordinator periodically invites professional scientists (from universities or industry) to give informal presentations and discussions for all to join in no matter what ‘stupid questions’ are posed!
