In normal circumstances (outside of Covid lockdowns etc...) the group meets on the third Wednesday of the month for discussion of historical topics – at present we are broadly considering topics relating to the Georgian and Victorian periods.
There is no strict rota or timetable, but every few months a member will research, prepare and present a piece of work on a relevant topic of their own choosing. The amount of research involved varies, but mainly we resort to books or the internet, - secondary sources rather than primary. We are not a group of academics, but people keen to learn in a friendly and informal atmosphere.
The secret of the success of the group is that the numbers are small and that everyone is prepared to participate. Although we don’t all necessarily know each other well, outside of the group, we are relaxed in each other’s company and very appreciative of the efforts we all make to keep the meetings interesting and stimulating.
There have been no Group meetings during lock-down and at present we have no plans to resume until circumstances permit. In the meantime we have remained in contact by submitting pieces of work to members by email and circulating quizzes. We did consider holding Zoom meetings but there was insufficient interest.
Because we are all supportive of our fellow members’ efforts, we all consider it important to attend regularly and to keep numbers comparatively low, which is why the status of the group is “full” but if you would like more information about how it operates, and would like our assistance in starting a new group, please send us an email from the 'CONTACT' page of this website and we will get back to you by email or phone.
