CORONAVIRUS - FOLLOWING GOVERNMENT ADVICE, ALL MEETINGS AND EVENTS HAVE BEEN CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUR GROUP LEADER IF YOU NEED ANY FURTHER INFORMATION.
AS SOON AS THE SITUATION RETURNS TO NORMAL, WE WILL BE ADVERTISING MEETINGS/EVENTS ON THIS PAGE, AS USUAL.
In normal times:
Our monthly meeting is normally held on the 3rd Thursday in the month at the Spotlight, Hoddesdon when the doors open at 10am and our speaker starts at 10.45. However due to Coronavirus restrictions the monthly meetings are being held by Zoom until the pandemic abates, or when we can find a suitable hall in which to hold our meetings as the Spotlight may not open in 2021. PLEASE NOTE the OCTOBER 2021 Meeting has been scheduled to be at the LAURA TROTT Centre in CHESHUNT. Please look out for a "Flyer" advertising this event.~
Normally before the speaker begins, there is time to talk to the Group Leaders and browse the information available on all our interest groups, and to have a coffee with friends. If you are a visitor, you will have the opportunity to be shown around by a U3A member.
You can buy second hand books at very reasonable prices from our Bookstall and a ticket from our Raffle table (excellent prizes!). These raise funds for our U3A.
Our Monthly Meeting Talks for the next few months are listed below, together with a little history and any events organised by various Groups.
In the 20 years of our existence the Speakers at the Broxbourne U3A have been booked by just two people, originally the Founder Chairman, Glyn Wilson and for the past twelve years by Jean Hart, Chairman 2008 - 2012. Throughout they have been congratulated on the excellence of the Speakers so Jean's successor when she soon retires has a big job to do!
Each year, the ideal programme would include: Art/Antiques, Travel, History, Career/Personal Experiences, Nature, Theatre, Gardening, Music, Humour, Charity & General Interest etc. Whether we were hearing about Life as an Auctioneer or as a Prison Officer, having an Introduction to Gemstones, listening to Tales from a Scotland Yard Detective, relating to a Friendship with The Rubbish Picker's Wife from Kosovo, musing on the Life of Picasso and his Women or being surprised to hear how the Potato shaped History we were being educated or entertained in the nicest way!
At times we have rubbed shoulders with Speakers from Television, David Battie, Bunny Campione & John Benjamin all from the Antiques Roadshow, Jeremy Spake, Richard Whitmore too and the late Nipper Read, to mention a few.
And then Covid-19 arrived and we were only able to have two meetings early this year. What a mercy that in February we were able to celebrate our 20th Anniversary, a lovely memory to help get us through Lockdown. Booked Speakers were quickly asked to come instead in 2021 and most have agreed. Indeed, many would be able to give their talks via Zoom if required and we have already run some meetings via zoom. The Programme (both past and present) is set out below :-
19th Nov. 2020 The Zoom Show by Fool's Gold. (Music)
21st Jan 2021 Lighting the Fuse by Lucy Lewis (A woman's life in the Army)
