Group Visit to Stoke Bruerne - Sept 2019
Despite threats of heavy rain, the Local History Group was extremely lucky to have had a bright and sunny morning on Thursday 26th September to enjoy a visit to the Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum, followed by a trip on the canal boat “Charlie” up to the tunnel and back. The Museum was extremely interesting so, after morning coffee and biscuits in the attached café, we explored the two floors of exhibits, storyboards and even a full-size mock-up of the cabin on a working canal boat. This last item was fascinating, as it probably housed a fairly large family in the space smaller than the average modern 2-berth caravan! I think we were all intrigued by the boards used by the bargemen to “walk” the boats through Blisworth Tunnel – something we all very much understood the difficulty of when we went aboard “Charlie” to venture a few hundred yards into the tunnel – dark, damp and claustrophobic.
Many of the group were still talking about the visit over lunch at The Boat Inn – and we were so lucky with the weather! See photos of the outing on the right.

Group Visit to Delapre Abbey - Aug 2019
Following the Architecture Group’s successful visit to the newly reopened Delapre Abbey in 2018, the Local History Group decided to go on the Abbey’s new “Restoration Tour” on 22nd August 2019. Members were given a “behind the scenes” tour, including the cellars, which are not usually open to visitors. The tour described how restoration of the building was undertaken by master craftsmen and local volunteers to bring the old building back to life. Of particular note were the remarkably ornate ceilings in some of the rooms, which have been lovingly restored – the use of the building as the Public Records office with strip lighting, heating and air conditioning systems installed some years ago having destroyed much of the plaster work – fortunately this has now been put right. During the restoration some Roman artefacts have been unearthed, meaning the site has probably been in use for much longer than originally thought. The photograph on the right is of one of the rooms where plasterwork has had to be restored.

Sulgrave Manor Visit Report - May 2019
see attached report under LINKS, at the top right of this page
where you will also find the programme for the second half of 2019

Some 26 members of Brixworth & District U3A met on Friday 23rd November 2018 to discuss and plan the proposed new Local History group. Having viewed the busy Brixworth U3A monthly planner, it has been agreed that the group will meet on the fourth Thursday of each month from 10 – 12 noon. The venue (to begin with at least) will be Maidwell Village Hall.

The first meeting will be on Thursday 24th January 2019

While we hope in the summer to have a mixture of outside visits/walks/explorations, the first few meetings, starting in January, will be talks. A very lively discussion took place with many suggestions for topics for us to take an interest in.

I have agreed to act as Group Leader to get the group up and running, with Sue Wintersgill (suewints@hotmail.co.uk) as my deputy. Interest sub-groups will get together to undertake various research projects with a view to presenting these at our monthly meetings.

The programme will be on display at the U3A Monthly Meetings but, to begin with, we will look at some of the “Spires & Squires of Northamptonshire” on 24th January and “Sulgrave Manor and the Washington Family” on 28th February.
