Welcome to Walking South

Here is a little more information about how the group operates and what to expect if you would like to join us.

Firstly, we are a very friendly group so please don’t be shy – just mention to the walk leader and other walkers that you are new and you will be made welcome. We walk at a moderate pace – there is time to admire the views, particularly on the uphills! – though we do like to keep up a reasonable speed so that we finish by lunchtime.

We walk every other Friday and details about the walk are sent out by email about 5-7 days beforehand. The email will give the meeting place, time (usually 10 for 10.15) and some information about the terrain. So this may include approximate length of walk (we aim for 4-5 miles), number of stiles, how hilly it is, whether there is likely to be cattle or lots of mud. It will also give you contact details for the walk leader of the day and if you wish to join the walk you should contact them and give them your mobile phone number if you have one.

If you don’t want to go on the walk there is no need to answer the email. Some people go on most walks; others only walk with us occasionally.

If the weather forecast is bad the walk leader will decide whether to go ahead, perhaps shortening the walk, or else cancel it. In the latter case we will contact anyone who has booked onto the walk to let them know. If you decide not to go on a walk once you have booked please be sure to let the walk leader know so that the walk is not delayed while we wait for you!

You will probably want to bring a bottle of water and/or a flask and we would normally make a drink stop part way through the walk. There is also usually a pub or cafe near the meeting place and some walkers like to go for a drink or food at the end of the walk.

Walks are devised and led by members of the group. There is no obligation to lead a walk but we do need a good pool of volunteers for the group to continue to operate, as we walk about 25 times a year. If you don’t feel confident to lead a walk alone but would like to do one jointly with someone else please let the group convener (Gillian) know and she can put you in touch with someone in the same position.

Important note about insurance:
Those who participate in the Walking South walks do so at their own risk. They take responsibility for their own safety and should organise their own accident insurance if required - U3A covers walkers for Public Liability only, details of which can be found on the Bristol U3A website under 'About Us'
