Italian Conversation, Fishponds
What it is: For people with some Italian who'd like to improve their ability through conversation, in a friendly and welcoming group.
When it is: Alternate Wednesday afternoons, 2.30pm.
Where it is: At the Cross Hands pub in Fishponds, at the top end of Fishponds Road where the road divides. To the left is Downend Road and to the right is Staple Hill Road.
The group is for speakers of Italian who are past Beginners level and have a good understanding of spoken Italian but would like to improve their speaking skills. A topic is chosen, generally by the leader, and is discussed in pairs. The last half hour is usually a general discussion around the table either about the topic or about something else entirely. The reason why we discuss the topic in pairs is to ensure everyone speaks instead of going round the group one by one and having someone wait some timebefore speaking. We help each other out with grammar and vocabulary queries. Often we deviate from the topic, which is not a problem - the important thing is that everyone builds up their confidence in conversing. Occasionally we play games. We need to put fun into learning and using what is a beautiful language.
I believe the most important thing is to be able to communicate. Italians are very forgiving towards those who make mistakes and are thrilled to hear foreigners making an effort. They will often gently correct you.
