Reminiscences of Brightlingsea
This group was one of the very first to form in Brightlingsea in 2005. From the start the aim was to meet with older people in the town in an informal way to gather their personal memories and stories of Brightlingsea. Group members met with people individually and in social gatherings and contacts snowballed. Gradually the group assembled a lot of material from people who seemed to enjoy sharing their memories, looking out scrapbooks, finding photographs and generally taking a trip down memory lane. The group wanted to do justice to them and so came the idea of publishing some of the stories. We now have seven booklets in a series we have called ‘Brightlingsea Heritage’: ‘The All Saints Extravaganzas’, ‘Toy Trumpet Workshops’, ‘The Small Boat Builders of Brightlingsea’, ‘The Lady Wood Carvers and the Story of a Set of Chisels’, ‘The YMCA in Brightlingsea’, ‘The Story of an Unusual Beach Hut’ . The latest was a collection of childhood memories ‘Brightlingsea: Memories of Childhood in the 1930’s and 1940’s’. We are now working on childhood memories of the 50’s and 60’s. The group is currently finding out about local pubs, both current and those which have closed. There is always lots to do and much fun to be had doing it! New members are always welcome!
