We meet on the 4th Wednesday at 10.00 in a member’s home in Bridport and finish soon after mid-day
If you just listen to opera, you miss 2/3 of the experience, especially if you're not fluent in the language being sung. The music may be spectacular but who is singing? What’s going on? What are they singing about? While it's best to see a live performance, a recording on a DVD with subtitles is a decent alternative, and far cheaper.
Operas may be chosen because they are favourites or because they are new and unknown to us and we want to broaden our experience.
All being well, the opera is short enough to watch the whole performance in one session or we might watch a longer one over two consecutive months. Occasionally a member will provide a brief summary and then show edited highlights of the DVD performance.
It’s hilarious, dramatic, uplifting, poignant, soulful . . . certainly not always screechy women, fat men, doom and death . . . and it comes with tea and biscuits.
